Boston Common and Public Garden
Boston Common
Boston, MA
The Boston Common is known to be one of the oldest public parks in the country. The park is almost 50 acres in size. Today you can enjoy a leisurely stroll or sit and watch passersby on a warm summer day. Concerts are held on the Common during summer months. The "Common" has been used for many different purposes throughout its long history. Until 1817, public hangings took place there, up through 1830, cattle grazed. British troops camped on Boston Common prior to the Revolution and left from there to face colonial resistance at Lexington and Concord in April, 1775. Location: Bound by Tremont, Beacon, Charles and Boylston Streets.
The Public Garden, established in 1837, is the first public botanical garden in the United States. Today, with its plant material chosen for ornamental excellence as well as its botanical diversity, it forms a green and flowering oasis in the heart of a great metropolis. No visit to Boston would be complete without a stroll in the Garden which is maintained by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department in cooperation with the Friends of the Public Garden.
