USO Connects Military Children in Need with the Raytheon Corporation
USO facilitated matching military kids in need with new bicycles at Raytheon’s second annual “Build a Bike” program held at the Burlington Marriott Hotel on September 13th. The program is part of an annual team building exercise for incoming engineers at the Raytheon Corporation. Families representing all branches of the service attended in person to receive the bicycles and thank the team personally. Teams of engineers spent the morning assembling the bicycles as part of their “Kick-off” weekend program. The children were filled with excitement, enthusiasm and appreciation as their new bicycles were unveiled and presented to them by each team individually.
“Thank you for such a wonderful and kind gesture. Both our son and grandson were so happy and proud to receive their new bicycles. It was so kind of you to honor service members in this way…….”

USO Gives Military Kids a Jumpstart with Literacy
On October 8th, USO participated once again the Jumpstart and Pearson Foundation’s annual Read for the Record campaign, which encourages teens and adults from across the country to read with young children. The official book of Jumpstart’s 2009 Read for the Record campaign was The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. By encouraging a single, common day of reading engagement where participants read the same book, USO engaged military families in working to set a new world record for participation. Children of military members on Hanscom Air Force Base, Newport Naval and several Coast Guard locations joined record numbers of children to read the book aloud and participate in a themed caterpillar craft activity. All children were able to take home a new copy of the beautiful book to continue reading with family at home. This event was extremely popular and applauded by the military commands as one that brings educational and morale boosting value to their families.
