BOSTON (NNS) -- Two officers attached to the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS WASP (LHD 1) were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, by Medal of Honor recipients during a reception, June 29 in Boston.

Lt. Cmdr. Wayne Haddad of the Chaplain Corps was pinned by Medal of Honor recipient retired Captain Thomas G. Kelley and Cmdr. Bruce Boyle, who serves alongside Haddad as a chaplain on board WASP. Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Zayac was pinned by Medal of Honor recipient retired Capt. Thomas J. Hudner and retired Lt. Col. Enoch Woodhouse II, who served with the famed Tuskegee Airmen.

Haddad explained that having the Medal of Honor recipients participating in the ceremony was an awesome opportunity, even though it was not part of the initial plan.

“Originally, Lt. Cmdr. Zayac and I had planned to have a small ceremony, but instead we had the privilege of celebrating this event with these honored guests, our wonderful wardroom, members of the crew, and a number of friends of team WASP in the historic and beautiful city of Boston.”

Haddad felt extremely honored to be pinned by a Medal of Honor recipient who he says, “represents the most distinguished gallantry and service to our beautiful nation under God.”

Lt. Cmdr. Zayac echoed the sentiment saying, “it was an honor to have two legendary American heroes participate in my promotion ceremony. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what they have accomplished. This was a promotion that I will never forget.”

WASP was in Boston to help represent the Navy in the City’s Harborfest 2007 festivities.
