USO Welcomes Wounded Warriors to Boston

The USS CONSTITUTION and USO New England worked together to create a unique opportunity for wounded warriors from around the nation. On June 4th, 140 wounded warriors and their guests were invited to sail on the Navy's oldest floating commissioned ship, USS CONSTITUTION. "Old Ironsides" was scheduled to get underway that day for a special trip to honor those who have been injured while serving their country and conduct a ceremony to commemorate the Battle of Midway. The USO provided entertainment, support for guests and hosted a post-sail luncheon. The warriors, from both OIF and OEF, represented all branches of the service and many different states throughout the country. As the ship sailed out of Charlestown early that morning, she flew the USO flag for the first time. The USO Liberty Bells sang God Bless America as a wreath was lowered into the water at Fort Independence at Castle Island where a 21 gun salute was exchanged with soldiers on land. Rear Admiral Robert Wray, Deputy Commander of Military Sealift Command spoke about the battle

Meanwhile, as the ship was underway, USO volunteers were behind the scenes and busy preparing to welcome the 350 guests to a festive New England lunch held in a beautifully decorated event tent on the nearby grounds at the Korean War Memorial.

When the guests arrived, they were greeted by the "USO team", who was eager to welcome everyone and help make their afternoon a memorable one. President John Mitchell welcomed the guests on behalf of USO and Chaplain John Smith, USCG offered a blessing for all and for those who are serving.

Foster's of Maine and their friendly crew did an outstanding job catering a traditional New England Clambake, complete with Maine wild blueberry cake. The menu seemed to delight guests, particularly those who had never had an opportunity to eat a fresh Maine lobster.

In sync with USO's rich tradition of providing entertainment to the troops for almost 70 years, the Liberty Bells, USO's 40's style musical trio, performed a beautiful medley of patriotic and nostalgic songs and even managed to coax several guests up to dance. All in all it was a memorable day for pausing to remember and celebrate our patriots and their families who endure so much and have sacrificed of both body and spirit.
