USO's United Through Reading Program

“A child has a hard time understanding that mom or dad is okay from an e-mail or a letter. A video image reassures the child that his or her parent is doing well. To me, the reassurance of the child is the primary benefit of the United Through Reading program®.”
- Chaplain LCDR Charles S. Thompson III, Marine Wing Support Group 27

What is United Through Reading® ?

Since 1990, United Through Reading, a California-based nonprofit organization, has been uniting military families facing physical separation by having the deployed service member read a children's book aloud while being recorded on DVD to send home to their children. In addition to recording sites on Navy ships worldwide and remote operating bases in Iraq and Afghanistan, through its partnership with United Through Reading®, service men and women can also visit more than 60 USO centers in airports, community locations, military medical facilities, and overseas bases to read a book aloud while being recorded on DVD.

How can United Through Reading® be best utilized while preparing for an upcoming deployment?

Take advantage of this easy process and complete a recording session before you or a loved one deploy. The military member preparing for deployment schedules a recording session with the USO United Through Reading Program Coordinator. Recording session are available on-site at the USO Center in Boston and at on-site alternate locations, regularly, throughout New England for your convenience. The DVD, a copy of the book, instructions, as well as information on the program, are given to the military member to leave with the child’s parent or caregiver, so that the DVD can be introduced to the child at an appropriate time after the military member has shipped out.  The parent or caregiver is encouraged to photograph and/or videotape the child’s excitement as they watch the DVD, follow along with the book, and send it to the military member abroad.

How can United Through Reading® be best utilized while I am deployed?

The deployed military member visits a participating USO center abroad and completes a recording session. The DVD, a copy of the book, instructions, and information on the program, are mailed to the child and family back home. All, books and packing and shipping materials are supplied by the USO, so the process is easy and enjoyable. The parent or caregiver is encouraged to photograph and/or videotape the child’s excitement as they watch the DVD and follow along with the book. The photograph and DVD is sent to the deployed family member to encourage them to participate again while they are away.

Is there a fee with the program?

No. All taping, books and mailings are free of charge to the service member.

How can I ask and get any further questions I have about the program answered or make an appointment to record a “read aloud” session?

You simply contact the USO New England's United Through Reading Coordinator by emailing: unitedthroughreading@uso-newengland.org. The Program Coordinator will follow-up with you to discuss the program and make arrangements for a taping session at your earliest convenience.
